Chapter 15
A thick stand of evergreens stood between the highway and Adam's family's house on the lake, so thick I couldn't even see the house from the tiny bit of driveway we could pull into before having to stop at a gate. Andrew's car was in front of me, and I saw him press a button on a talk box, but it was Tlalli who leaned over him from the backseat to speak to whoever was on the other end.
"I wonder what she's saying," I said to Loke.
"She's your friend," he said.
"Not really," I admitted. "I've only met her a couple of times. She's quite a bit younger than Jesús, and he and I never really hung out besides at work, anyway. I mean, we both worked a lot of hours, usually together. But I don't know her well at all."
"I like her," Loke said as if that settled the matter.
"Yeah, I think I do too," I said.
I had no idea what she said, but I wasn't entirely surprised when the gates swung open and first Andrew and then I drove through, following the curving driveway down the slope of a hill until first the lake and then an immense brick mansion came into view.
"Quaint," Loke said. "Cozy little place. What do you think, just twelve bedrooms?"
"These people own a yacht they are willing to let their son take out for parties without their supervision," I said as I pulled up beside Andrew and shut off the car. "I don't think wasting money is something they worry about much."
As Loke and I got out of the car, we realized we were catching the others in mid conversation.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Tlalli wants us to say here," Jesús told me.
"I don't think that's a good idea," Andrew said. "We should stick together."
"If all six of us turn up on the doorstep, their housekeeper is going to freak out," Tlalli said. "I think it should be just me and Ingrid."
"What did you tell her?" I asked.
"I told her that my friend is Adam's girlfriend and she left something in his room the last time she was here," Tlalli said. "That's you, by the way. You're the girlfriend."
"Who's going to believe that?" I asked.
"I can sell it," Tlalli said, looping her arm through mine. "But the guys have to stay here. We're just two friends retrieving a thing of personal significance. We don't need a gang."
"Ingrid-" Andrew started to say.
"No, I think she's right," I said. "We just want to have a look around, right? This makes sense. He's not home, is he?" I asked Tlalli.
"No, she's not seen him at all today," Tlalli said.
"You four can be lookout, and we'll call if we run into any trouble," I said. "If he's not here, this is our best chance at snooping."
"Fine. We'll wait here," Andrew said, but I could tell that he hated it.
"What are we going to do when she doesn't recognize me?" I whispered to Tlalli as we climbed the steps to the front door.
